Thank you for your mention of Gary Ferguson, whom I’d not heard of. Surely you know of Barry Lopez (both Of Wolves and Men and Artic Dreams are superb and will bring both chills and tears with the way he could turn a sentence) and Rick Bass (The Ninemile Wolves, The book of Yaak, The Lost Grizzlies and several more books that pull you right into the wilderness and the love of it.) If you do not, I'm sure you'd find them both impressive for their passionate writing.
